You can set product taxes at three levels: globally, by product group, and by individual product. All products initially use the system tax settings configured under Admin → Settings → Taxes. Product groups let you override the system tax settings for multiple related products at once, while individual product settings let you apply a specific tax configuration to a single product.
This article explains how to configure product tax settings for individual products and product groups.

- Review product group tax settings before troubleshooting individual product tax settings.
- Test an order after changing tax settings to confirm that taxes are calculated as expected.
Troubleshooting
The Tax exempt checkbox is checked and greyed out
Taxes are not applying to a product
Check whether the product or its assigned product group is set as tax exempt. Also confirm that the required taxes are enabled under Admin > Settings > Taxes > Current Taxes.
A product is using the wrong tax rate
Review whether the product is using Use System or Specify Custom. If Specify Custom is selected, confirm that the correct tax is enabled and the correct rate is entered.
FAQs
Can I configure taxes for one product only?
Yes. Open the product, select Taxes, and configure the individual product tax settings.
Can I configure taxes for multiple products at once?
Yes. Configure the tax settings for the product group. Products assigned to that group will use the product group tax settings.
Why is the product-level Tax exempt checkbox disabled?
The checkbox is disabled when the product belongs to a product group that is set as tax exempt. The setting is inherited from the product group and is therefore forced at the product level.
Does tax exemption apply to decorations?
Yes. Tax exemption applies to the overall product, including the blank product and any decorations added to it.
Where are global tax settings configured?
Global tax settings are configured under Admin > Settings > Taxes.
