One Product with different text options

So we have one product in one colour but we want the ability to show the different print options visually to carry the order through to checkout.

The basic way would be a custom field but we would prefer something similar to when we select the colour and the image changes.

Does anyone use a work around ? 

Ideally we don't want to create multiple products for one small alteration.
