Option to set custom colors inactive without deleting them

We have a few products we keep in stock and when we run out, we take it out of inventory and uncheck the color the color. When you do that it deletes out the color image and when we restock, we have to re upload everything rather than just checking the box. If it is no longer available it would be ok for that color to sit there unchecked.
